Cairo, the mother of all cities has some of the most breathtaking attractions in the world on offer, and with some five millennia of history in Egypt to celebrate, there is plenty to see and do.
With more than 100,000 artefacts in its collection, the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities spans Egyptian history from the early days of civilisation in the country right through to the Roman era.
Undoubtedly, the top attractions are the Tutankhamun Galleries, which display the gold and gem-inlaid funerary mask and 1700 other treasures found in the tomb of the Boy King, and the Royal Mummy Room, which contains the corpses of 11 of Egypt's most powerful pharaohs including Seti I and his son Ramses II.
There is far too much in the museum to take in on a single visit, and even if you're only planning to see a few bits and pieces, you should still allow a good half-day to wander around. Many people recommend taking two trips to the museum during your stay in the city.
Once listed as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the massive pyramids of Giza have become the symbol of the whole country, and together with the mysterious sphinx are the attractions that many people travel from all over the world to see. You can go inside the tombs if you pay extra to a guide.
Close by them, hawkers offer camel trips into the desert, and a whole industry based on selling small models of the buildings.
A great place to go for views over the sprawling city is the top of the Cairo Tower, which can be seen from almost anywhere, and stands close to the opera house on an island in the centre of the River Nile.
The Islamic Art Museum is home to one of the world's largest and finest collections of Islamic art, dating from the seventh to the nineteenth centuries. And to view everything inside it would take forever, however an afternoon is plenty of time to see the main attractions.
