To its many inhabitants, Cairo is known as the mother of all cities. Home to the magnificent Pyramids of Giza, and the enigmatic Sphinx; Cairo has claims to being at the centre of civilisation for the rest of the world.

It's a confusing and sprawling place, where life moves at a breakneck pace, and goes on 24 hours a day. A place where the past and present sit side by side, and next to ancient ruins, space age skyscrapers point into the sky, where the muezzin calling the faithful to prayer is drowned out by western music, and a place where whenever you get above the roof tops, you can see the mightiest of the wonders of the ancient world, The gigantic Pyramids of Giza looming above the haze of heat and sand raised from the Sahara Desert.

With some 16 million people calling Cairo home, the city itself is huge, spreading out from the River Nile into the desert, and measuring around 40KM from north to South. The layout of the city is fairly confusing, and at times it seems as there is no order in the way it is laid out, although the main area for tourists is quite small, and is the part known as the Islamic City, which is where you can find most of the important museums, markets and sights.

Increasingly popular as a short break destination with many tourists coming for just three or four days, Cairo is a place that you could explore for months, and still not see everything that there is on offer.

You can get cheap deals on flights and package holidays to Cairo throughout the year, and the comparatively low cost of hotel accommodation in Cairo means that once there, a holiday spent seeing some of the most impressive sights in the world can cost an awful lot less than you would initially think.
