The mighty expanse of the Sahara desert spreads out from the city as far as the eye can see, and offers awe inspiring scenery which can be experienced on trips by 4WD vehicle or camel.
Many companies offer such trips, and indeed you can rent a jeep of your own, and then explore the desert for yourself, but it is fool hardy to do so without having first done a brief driving course, and ensured that you have plenty of fuel and water as well as GPS navigation, because every year, people do get themselves lost in the Sahara, and some are never found again.
Larger companies offering the tours will do so as part of a convoy, and usually include a meal in the evening as the sunsets, making such trips popular with people celebrating a special occasion.
