Richer in history than perhaps any other country in the world, Egypt, with its pyramids, temples, and the mighty sphinx is a place that makes people dream like no other in the world. Undeniably the main draw in Egypt is the majesty of its history, and the many awe inspiring monuments that dot its historic land, but there are many other attractions in Egypt that are equally spectacular: The mighty River Nile that carves its way through the centre of the desert; the beautiful Red Sea Coast that offers some superb beach resorts and some of the best diving in the World; Cairo, the vibrant capital city, where modernity reflects the ancient, and amongst the twisting back streets there are still places where business is done in the same way as it was centuries ago; And the Mediterranean Coast in the North, where you can relax on the beaches in between exploring the sights of empires long dead.
With a flying time of around 2.5 - 3 hours from the UK, and an excellent climate year round, whether you want to relax on a beach, or explore the many sights, either as a short city break, or as a longer holiday.
Most people's experience of the country does not go beyond Cairo, the sprawling metropolis of some 16 million people and a place where chaos has been left to run riot over millennia. Cairo has many sights, including the fantastic exhibitions at the Egyptian Museum, which holds more than 100,000 artefacts in its displays, it's a great place to get out of the sun for a few hours and soak up the history.
When you go to the Pyramids at Giza, don't expect a quiet contemplative place where you can speculate on the history of mankind, and the wonder of the world. The Giza Plateau is probably the biggest tourist attraction in the whole of Africa, and whether you go at sunrise to get the best photographs, the middle of the day, or at sunset to watch the lightshow on the Sphinx, the area will be packed with other people doing the same as you.
The hordes of tourists are matched by the hordes of hawkers who will sell you everything from a camel ride into the desert, to models of the pyramids. There are approved guides who offer tours inside the pyramids - although these are definitely not for the claustrophobic.
