On arrival into Cairo airport, most package holidays will already include a transfer to get you to your hotel, but if you haven't booked one, then it is a reasonably simple matter to get a taxi from the arrivals area.
Cairo is home to one of the most modern cheapest and cleanest underground systems in the world, although no one actually uses it, because they're to busy seeing the sights on the surface. If you're in a hurry to get from one place to another in the city, then it's a sensible choice, but otherwise it is as easy to flag down a cab at the side of the road.
One of the most pleasant ways of seeing the city is by boat, and there are a number of river buses that operate along the Nile between the city and the Giza pyramids to the south, in addition to which, many boat taxis and pleasure cruises operate as well.
You may want to hire a car in Cairo, and travel round by yourself in order to see the sights, but unless you are staying outside the city, and never intend to go inside, then it's a good idea, and great value for money. On the other hand, negotiating the crowded streets of Cairo at rush hour, with a cacophony of horns blaring around you, and tears burning your cheeks from the frustration is the best reason for never entering the city under your own steam.
