There are major events throughout the year in Cairo, although you tend to find that most of them happen during the "winter" when the temperatures are a little lower. The Annual International Experimental Theatre Festival offers some culture - although censorship means that there's not much experimentation. This is followed by the Arab music festival in November, and the Cairo International Film Festival (allegedly uncensored) in December.
Once Christmas is out of the way, the New Year starts with the Nitaq Festival in late February, which includes poetry and art installations in a variety of venues across the city.
