Many visitors to the city of Riga are surprised about just how much there is to do once they get there, and although many parts of Riga are relatively recent, and are not terribly attractive to look at, within the old town, there are many charming buildings and sights to see.
Riga Cathedral is one of the most striking buildings in the city, and also one of the most historic. The foundations were originally laid in 1211, and the building itself is a mix of gothic and Romanesque architecture. There is a museum of the city's history inside the cathedral, which has exhibits describing the history between the wars.
Close to the central station, four gigantic zeppelin hangars have been converted into the Central Market, which is ranked amongst the most interesting sights in the city. The yawning interior is mostly a food market, while outside, under yellow canvas, there are plenty of small stalls selling everything from Soviet Era televisions through to saucy lingerie.
The Latvian War Museum is housed in a Red Brick building in the city centre, and is home to exhibitions on the country's history as the subject of conflict. Covered are the War of Independence, and the Second World War.
