Away from the city, a good place to get rid of the cobwebs is the coastal area of Jurmala, a collection of villages and Beach resorts which line the Gulf of Riga to the West of the capital.
On the whole the beaches are clean and relatively crowd free except on the weekends, and the area is well serviced by bus from Riga, although tourists who have hired a car really benefit from the flexibility, as the weather can change quickly from sun to showers, and often the only course of action when the rain really gets started is to head back to your hotel and go out in one of the great bars in the city instead.
