Although Latvia is ostensibly a Christian country, several pagan festivals are also celebrated in the city of Riga, and these include the Midsummer Festival, Jani, and the Ligo Diena that precedes it. Christmas and New Year are also well observed in the city, and on December 31st there is a large party on Dome Square - although should you want to visit Latvia for New Year, you need to book well in advance, and also ensure that you dress up warmly, as the weather will be frighteningly cold.
