Since gaining independence from the Soviet Union in the 1990s, Latvia has gone through many changes, but in common with its neighbours Estonia and Lithuania the nation is characterised as being a dynamic and friendly place, where the local population are proud of their country, and eager to show off its best features to the world.
Quickly getting a great reputation as a place to spend a few days touring and having great value accommodation as well as an emerging café culture, Latvia, and in particular the capital city Riga, is well on its way to becoming one of the best destinations for a weekend break in Northern Europe, and in many circles, it is being described as the new Prague.
Riga is home to many great bars and clubs, as well as some good value hotels. Days can be spent sightseeing in the old quarter where Riga castle dating from around 1300 is one of the oldest and best-preserved fortresses in Europe.
Away from the city, a good place to get rid of the cobwebs is the coastal area of Jurmala, a collection of villages and beach resorts which line the Gulf of Riga to the West of the capital.
Most of the beaches are clean, and the area is well serviced by bus from Riga, although tourists who have hired a car really benefit from the flexibility, as the weather can change quickly from sun to showers, and often the only course of action is to head back to the hotel and go out in the city instead.
