For fans of intense pint sized actor Tom Cruise, a visit to the famous Miramar Air Force and Marine Base - the setting for the 1980s commercial for joining the US Navy, sorry, film "Top Gun" is a great way to spend a day. The base organises free tours of the whole site every other Saturday throughout the year (not October) and although photography is strictly forbidden, a chance to visit the pub where "maverick" got drunk. Larger groups can be booked direct with the base.
