Gateway to southern Texas, and home to the biggest tourist draw in the whole of the Lone Star State, San Antonio is a city where Mexican and American influences collide, and where the history of the country can be seen in the back street mission churches, and frontier attitude of the locals.
Historically important as the home of the Alamo, that most enduring symbol of America's long journey shaking off the shackles of colonial power, San Antonio is now one of the most stunning cities in all of Texas, home to well over a million people and a place with a great nightlife, many museums dedicated to the long struggle towards independence, and several large American Sports teams including the San Antonio Spurs.
The main tourist area is the Paseo del Rio (River Walk), where there are a huge variety of restaurants and bars to relax in during the evening, and where you can find the main Christmas lights and nightlife throughout the year. The nearby Hermis Fair Park in the city centre is the home to several attractions including the Tower of the Americas, and The Alamo.
San Antonio is one of the cheapest cities in the United States when it comes to the cost of living, and in the down town area you can experience some of the best shopping in the whole country, as well as warm traditional Texan hospitality, and of course the spicy hot local Tex-Mex cuisine.
