Native Americans have occupied the area of Manhattan since around 11000 years ago, but the importance of New York only began with its establishment as a trading post by the Dutch East India Company in 1609, when it was named New Amsterdam. Renamed in 1664 as New York, when the British took over, New York was the site where George Washington became first President of the USA in 1789.
The city really began to grow in the late 19th century as the country became more industrialised and by 1876, Central Park had been inaugurated, and the city took on its current form.
The 1920s saw a huge boom in building, with the golden age of sky scrapers being constructed, including the massive Empire State building, which was for many years the tallest in the world, and is currently the tallest in the city.
On September 11th 2001 the whole world watched in horror as the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre were attacked by terrorists, but in characteristic New York style, the city fought back, and the vibrancy and hope which characterises its inhabitants meant that it was not long before the city was back on its feet, and back to normal.
