From San Francisco International Airport, it's a 22KM trip by either bus or taxi to the city centre, and once there, the compact size means that most of the attractions are within walking distance of each other. The legendary cable cars still drive down the centre of streets, and are one of the most popular ways of getting from one place to another.
Buses supplement them, and there are frequent services between most attractions.
Ferries connect the mainland with the many islands in San Francisco Bay, as well as between San Francisco and Oakland across the bay.
Driving a car in Central San Francisco is best avoided, although with so many sights to see close by, it is well worth hiring a car in order to drive out and see them. The Wine Country, and Monterrey are close enough to drive to and from in a day.
Taxis seem to be few and far between in the city, although if you ask the Concierge at a hotel, or the Maitre D in a restaurant to order one for you, it will arrive on time.
