The Chinese New Year is the highlight of life in Chinatown, and you could be forgiven for thinking that you were in Hong Kong, when all the streamers and parades fill the streets around the end on January.
Not to be outdone, the streets of Japantown fill with people for the Cherry blossom festival in April, and have dazzling Martial Arts displays amongst other cultural demonstrations.
Independence Day is celebrated with all the usual verve on 4th July, and there is a firework spectacular in the bay, while parties take place throughout the city, most notably in Golden Gate Park.
Castro Street is the centre of celebrations for Hallowe'en and on October 31st, you are likely to see the bars and clubs in the area filled with people in fancy dress. Its not compulsory, but all part of the fun.
