Being a purpose built beach resort rather than having developed over time, there is little of historic importance in Cancun itself, although comparatively close by there are many Mayan sights including the magnificent ruins at Chichen Itza.
For people who don't fancy the 2-hour trek across country to the ruins, there is an anthropological museum at the North end of the hotel strip, which has a good collection of exhibits that should more than satisfy the casual historian.
