Around 2 hours from Cancun are the fascinating and well preserved Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza, where you can spend a day seeing the sights and exploring the many monuments and buildings. A highlight of the city is the Pyramid of Kukulkan, which has been perfectly aligned with the sun so that on the spring and autumn equinox (March 21st and September 21st) shadows cast along the face of the structure create the illusion of a serpent crawling down the steps. If you're in the country at the right time, the serpent is an absolute must see, but at anytime, it's worth paying a visit just to soak up the history.
