Just a couple of miles off shore is the quiet and comparatively undeveloped Isla Mujeres, where there is a Turtle farm, where environmentalists are in the process of helping some 6 species of turtles to increase in numbers. Off the coast of Isla Mujeres, there is some of the best snorkelling in the Caribbean on the large reefs, which are home to a dazzling variety of sea life.
A short boat ride out to sea gets you to the uninhabited, and dreamily beautiful Isla Contoy, which is home to a bird sanctuary. Regular boat trips take visitors to the island, and there are many secluded coves, which offer a pleasant escape from the fast pace of life in Cancun itself.
