When the Mexican government decided to build the best beach resort in the world from scratch in the 1970s, they selected the undeveloped fishing village of Cancun and the thin sliver of land just off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula as the site for it, and immediately began work on creating a slice of paradise.

Bridges and causeways were constructed to link the mainland with the island, and engineers and builder flooded in, in order to start work planting gardens, and putting up the high rise hotels that have come to dominate the skyline.

When the resort opened in 1974, it was promoted as a tropical paradise, and visitors have been pouring in ever since, making Cancun one of the most visited and popular destinations in the Caribbean.
