The history of Mexico City itself builds on the foundations of Tenochtitlan, which was the Aztec capital of the region, and the site of Spanish Conquest of the country back in the 16th century.
The city developed along colonial lines, but its growth since the 19th century has been nothing short of astonishing, with over 1000 people arriving everyday from elsewhere in the country, prompting the city's population to explode by around a million every 3 years.
In 1968, the city hosted the Olympics, and was the site in 1986 of the FIFA World Cup Finals, although a year earlier, an earthquake had shaken the city to pieces, killing an estimated 10000 people in just a few minutes due to the poor quality buildings.
Since that day, the city has been largely redeveloped, and the unsafe older buildings have been replaced by modern ones, and the city has had its own government since 1997, which has made many changes, making the city a more prosperous, and pleasant place to visit.
