Las Vegas means "The Meadows" and came to prominence as a place with water and feed for horses that made it an important stop for travellers crossing the country. The area developed into a town with the building of the cross-country railroad in the 19th century, and was a rowdy frontier town with bars and brothels to appeal to the travelling man.
Las Vegas as we know it today only really began when the state of Nevada legalised gambling in 1931, and the first casinos began to open. Although the Flamingo, Las Vegas's first major casino was built by mobster Bugsy Siegel in 1946, the building boom really began in the 1950s, when resort casinos started to open, and by the 1970's when other states began to allow gambling, Las Vegas was in a position to change tack, and start on the massive family mega hotels that dominate the city to this day. Every year, a new development comes along that dwarves the rest, and the rides get more and more outrageous. Las Vegas is a new city, but it already has a clear identity as the place where America comes on its day off.
