Although the history of Barcelona stretches back to around 200BC, it really only rose to prominence when the Muslims were pushed out by the French in around 800AD and over the next few hundred years became the focus of the Catalan region. By the 15th Century, Barcelona was the centre of the Empire of Catalunya that extended influence over Sicily, Malta, and as far east as parts of Greece.
Catalunya finally became a part of the Spanish Republic in 1931, although since then, the Catalan region has screamed for independence, and even though the separatists still want to escape from Spanish Rule, it is remains a distant hope, and instead, the city has developed its own unique character as a place of beauty and bustling excitement.
The developments instigated for the 1992 Olympic games redeveloped large areas of the city, in particular the once shabby waterfront, which has become an urban paradise of parks, beaches and areas to walk and enjoy the day .
