With an excellent public transport system of trams connecting most of the city, and also through to the airport, Munich is an easy place to get around. Much of the city centre is pedestrianised, so you'll do quite a lot of walking from place to place if you go shopping or sightseeing, although taxis are handy during the night, or if the weather is bad.
There is some wonderful scenery and plenty to do outside the city, and hiring a car is a great idea in Munich in order to allow you to see a little more of Bavaria than just its capital.
