Second largest city in Germany, and one of the most important and busiest ports in the whole of Europe, Hamburg is a city that is home to almost 2 million people, and offers many attractions for travellers than many people think. Similar in many ways to the other great maritime cities such as Venice and Amsterdam, Hamburg has a large network of canals to wander along, and the enormous wealth generated during the era when the city state of Hamburg was a part of the historic Hanseatic League was spent on grand buildings and fabulous collections of art and on excellent museums.
Although much of the city was destroyed (and some 40,000 people killed) in the firestorms created by gigantic bombing raids in World War II, Hamburgers picked up the pieces, and rebuilt a modern, well thought out city of wide roads and parks, which makes Hamburg a pleasant place to visit, and simple to navigate.
These days, many people in Britain think of Hamburg as the German city where the Beatles began their playing career, and where Kevin Keegan ended his, but the truth about Hamburg is a city where commerce may well take a leading role, but there is also plenty of culture to soak up and enjoy on a short break to the region.
You can get cheap deals on flights and accommodation for Hamburg throughout the year, and with great shopping, and a top nightlife, Hamburg is an excellent city to explore if you want to see the real Germany - a modern efficient and friendly place with plenty to enjoy, no matter how long you are there for.
