Within driving distance of Miami, you can find yourself in the so called party capital of the world, Fort Lauderdale, which is a real eye-opener during the university Spring break weeks, when thousands of beery students descend on the city and go "wild" for a week.
The rest of the year, Fort Lauderdale is a pleasant town with plenty of bars and restaurants, slightly less glamorous than Miami, although much better if you are looking for a days sailing, or deep-sea fishing.
South of Miami, the Everglades stretch down to the Florida Keys, and the swamps are filled with tourists and alligators. The everglades was the setting for Gentle Ben, and many a child hood fantasy can be fulfilled riding on the airboats over the water.
