Major European carrier Lufthansa is being forced to once again increase the fuel surcharge levied on passengers due to continuing fuel price rises.
The airline are adding 10 Euros per leg to their long-haul services, for example flights to Sao Paolo, taking the total surcharge to a not insubstantial 77 Euros per flight segment. This converts to over GBP50, and as it is per segment a flight can easily see an extra GBP100 added to it, each way.
Of course the airline has to do something to counter the impact on its business caused by the continuing oil price increases, and asking passengers to pay more is the simplest and most effective way of doing this. There has to be a limit to what passengers will pay, and the worry across the industry is that this will soon be reached. At that point the airlines have to decide on what to do – to face increased costs themselves or maybe withdraw some services to balance the books.
