The biggest plane in the world, the Airbus A380, was seen by a US audience for the first time as it made flights to New York and also Los Angeles. They are the opening act for what is planned as a promotional tour for this aeronautical giant, aiming to showcase the aircraft both as an alternative for the airlines to consider and also as an amazing flight experience for travellers.
The New York flight was operated by Lufthansa, the German based carrier having ordered 15 of the aircraft, with a scheduled service set to begin in 2009. On board the flight were 460 passengers, 0ver 30 crew members plus highly skilled technicians from both Lufthansa and Airbus, as well as the usual gaggle of reporters eager to report on this iconic experience.
The schedule for the Lufthansa operated A380, having arrived into New York, is to go on to Chicago before heading back for home in the shape of Frankfurt. Following the usual checks the aeroplane will then head off to Hong Kong before returning to the USA when it will touch down at Washington Dulles airport.
Such flights are the bread and butter of the A380, designed as it is to travel long distances in supreme comfort and speed. The plane also has the capacity to avoid stopovers, greatly enhancing the craft as the best long haul option.
