Spokesmen for German Airline Lufthansa have claimed that a proposal for a ban on night flights at its main hub airport in Frankfurt will lead to thousands of job losses in the region, and force it to move its main operations somewhere else.
The airline, which employs around 35,000 people in and around Frankfurt claims that the plan to block use of the airport between 2300 and 0500 will mean that it will no longer be able to conduct the majority of its cargo and freight operations from Frankfurt, and will instead be forced to move this aspect of its business elsewhere, putting thousands of jobs at risk.
The airline also claims that plans to increase the size of the airport with a new runway will be put into jeopardy, as there will be no requirement and no investment from them to cover the costs.
Lufthansa currently uses Frankfurt as its main hub, operating hundreds of daily services across its network including flights to Hong Kong and many other destinations.
