For many people, Venice is an attraction in itself, and certainly, just wandering through the back streets, and exploring the city is a great way to see some pleasant and often surprising sights. The big attractions though, are St Mark's Square, where you can sit out and enjoy a coffee at one of the open-air bars before entering the beautiful Basilica with its collection of art and Byzantine mosaics; the Palace of the Doges from where Venice was ruled. The palace has a wide selection of Renaissance art by masters like Titian, and Veronese, and the beautiful exterior is a mixture of Islamic and Gothic styles that exemplify the stature of Venice as a trading nation.
The famous Rialto Bridge is only one of 3 that cross the Grand Canal, and is undeniably the most beautiful. Built in 1588, and home to several shops, the image of the Rialto Bridge is one of the most evocative symbols of the city.
Across the Lagoon from Venice itself, the crumbling island of Torcello is well worth visiting. Once home to some 20,000 people, now less than 100 call it home, and the island holds the ruins of the original city, overgrown and mysterious.
One must see sight in Venice, is the famous Bridge of Sighs, which famously got its name from the last sounds of prisoners being taken to execution sighing as they caught their last glimpse of the city. Although the story is almost certainly false, the bridge, which can be viewed from the inside as part of the secret tour of the Doge's Palace is one of the highlights of Venice, and certainly one of her most famous images.
