The chances are that no matter how long you are actually in Beijing for, you won't have enough time to see everything that you might want to in the city. The main attractions are Tiananmen Square, from where Mao Zedong declared the Chinese Revolution, and where 40 years later the government ruthlessly crushed a student protest against tyranny.
Mao's body lies forever in the mausoleum in the square as Lenin's does in Moscow.
The beautiful Forbidden City, which contains the palaces from where China was ruled by successive Dynasties from the 9000 rooms inside the walls.
The Summer Palace is another great sight to see, and this complex of parks and galleries was rebuilt by the last of the Qing Dynasty at the end of imperial power in China.
Well worth seeing are the Marble boat on Kunming Lake, and the murals and fantasy paintings in the Long Corridor in the main building.
The Temple of Heaven is located just to the south of Tiananmen Square, and is China's largest temple complex. Originally used by the emperor to pray for a good harvest, this UNESCO protected site has the famous echo wall that transmits even a whisper to people at the other end.
The Lama Temple is in the northeast of Beijing, and home to around 70 Tibetan monks. The temple contains a vast statue made out of a single sandalwood tree. The temple is a working monastery, so is not open throughout the day, only when the monks are not meditating.
