The biggest event of the year in Beijing is of course Chinese New Year, when the streets are filled with parades and children with firecrackers. It's a colourful time to visit the city, although rooms in hotels tend to be at a premium, and you need to book well in advance.
The Lantern Festival takes place 2 weeks after New Year, and the city is lit at night with small paper lanterns in a colourful display.
Outside the Traditional Chinese Calendar, a big event in the city is International Labour Day on 1st May. The festival commemorates the Communist Ideal, and the city is decorated throughout, and flowers are laid across Tiananmen Square.
