The city of Auckland has many museums and galleries, but the most popular attraction by far is Kelly Tarlton's Antarctic Encounter and Underwater World, where you can get up close and personal with a variety of penguins, and to see a faithful recreation of Captain Scott's Antarctic hut, and then wander through underwater Perspex tunnels to view sharks and stingrays swimming through the water that surrounds you. The park has been open since 1985, and was the first in the world to introduce the tunnel concept.
The Howick Historic Village takes visitors back in time to the 1840s, and gives you a chance to see what life was like for the early settlers in a perfectly reproduced version of the original city.
The Museum of Transport Technology and Social History in the city centre is a popular choice for a day out and has plenty of interactive exhibits that are great for kids. Aviation fans may be pleased to see the remains of Richard Pearse's Monoplane, which may well have first flown before the Wright Brothers managed to get off the ground.
