Maori history in the Auckland area dates back some 800 years or so, making the country one of the most recently settled in the world. Europeans only arrived in 1839; and the treaty of 1840 founded New Zealand as a country, and Auckland was first capital.
A leader in Social Welfare, New Zealand introduced minimum wage legislation, a welfare state, and an old age pension at the start of the 20th century, but the country suffered greatly during the two world wars, when 1 in 3 men between 20 and 40 years old served in the armed forces and led to a lost generation of men in the country.
The city declined after the war, although remained important in New Zealand life. In 1995, New Zealand won the Americas Cup sailing competition, and the subsequent investment in the city in time to host the 2000 competition meant that Auckland was extensively redeveloped and has become the leading tourist destination in the country, and the main gateway for exploring North Island.
