The favoured areas for going out in Auckland are around the waterfront area, and there are a number of fashionable bars to explore in the evening. Licensing laws are not strict, and some places sell alcohol 24 hours a day, while others close in the early hours in the morning.
As a rule there are no dress codes, but you should avoid wearing black jeans and leather, as these are associated with gangs, and frowned upon by many door staff.
A good place to go for an evening out is The Loaded Hog on Quay Street, and the nearby bars around the Americas Cup village, which were refurbished in 2000.
For late night entertainment, head to Karangahape Road (known locally as K road) where there are several clubs including Calibre, and a number of live music venues nearby including Papa Jack's Voodoo Lounge, and the PowerStation.
