BMI Abandon Southampton - Amsterdam Plans

Published: 18/09/06

In face of increasing competition, BMI have quietly dropped their plans to begin flying from Southampton to Amsterdam in October this year. BMI had intended to operate service to Amsterdam four times a day beginning on October the 29th with a view to competing with Scotairways.

BMI had intended to take advantage of demand on the route for both city breaks in Amsterdam, and also with a view to acting as a feeder service for Star Alliance carriers such s Thai, United, and Lufthansa. Scotairways already offer the same service with under a codeshare agreement with KLM and the Skyteam airline alliance.

Unfortunately for both airlines, Flybe began services on the route under the low cost model, acting solely as a point to point service and aggressively targeting the city break market for cheap flights to Amsterdam. With Flybe and Scotairways already operating the route, it no longer made sense for BMI to enter the market, and consequently the airline have cancelled their plans.

Any passengers who booked flights with BMI on the route will receive a full refund or a transfer onto a flight with Scotairways.
