Virgin Atlantic links with BMI

Amidst the flurry of takeover bids under consideration around the worldwide aviation industry at the moment on of the most intriguing is the rumour of a potential merger of BMI and Virgin Atlantic, which could create an airline large enough to take on British Airways on many major routes.

The complementary networks of the two airlines, with BMI concentrating on short haul, and Virgin Atlantic offering flights to Orlando and other long haul destinations would work well together.

Management at Virgin are thought to be quite close to making some kind of approach to BMI shareholders, and the next few weeks could prove crucial to any deal.
