British Mediterranean will cease to exist as an airline in its own right with effect from the end of October this year, when it will be fully integrated into the bmi brand, although it will continue to offer a British Airways code share facility to all 17 of its destinations across Africa and the Middle East.
bmi chairman Nigel Turner admitted that there would be head office job losses at the carrier as many of the administrative operations of the two airlines would be streamlined into a single unit, but claimed that the jobs of frontline staff such as cabin crew would be safe.
British Mediterranean offers a unique route network including flights to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, and Beirut, and has been in operation since 1994. In 1997 it became a BA franchise carrier, and has flown under British Airways colours since then.
