Significant activity by UK based operator BMI confirms what had been anticipated for some time. The airline is looking to further develop new routes in the mid to long haul segments, departing from London Heathrow.
BMI has just confirmed the purchase of five new Airbus A330 aircraft, with the first one expected into service as early as Spring 2008. The USD 500 million order will equip the carrier with sufficient capacity to better service the longer and more profitable routes, especially flights to the USA, an area BMI already know well.
The transatlantic operation will see the expansion thanks to the Open Skies agreement, something that really is making a difference to lots of operators. BMI already provide flights to Chicago and Las Vegas from Manchester, but has previously been unable to cater for the large market flying out of Heathrow.
