The German carrier Lufthansa has announced the first steps to a codesharing agreement with Brazilian operator TAM. The two parties are looking at the possibilities they can find for working closely together, with the combining of their services on both international and domestic routes one of the first things to be developed.
Taking a step back from the details of this arrangement, what becomes clear is that the Star Alliance, of which Lufthansa are a partner, appear to be moving back into the Latin American marketplace. They did used to have Argentinian carrier Varig as part of the group until last year when they were removed and it seems that this part of the world is somewhere they don’t want to miss out on. TAM have also made arrangements with TAP Portugal and United Airlines recently, both Star Alliance partners.
The Brazilian market is a growing one and with Lufthansa currently offering in the region of twenty flights to Sao Paolo per week this joining together with TAM could see them take a much more active role in the air travel developments of both Brazilian and other South American countries.
