Capital of the former soviet republic of Lithuania, Vilnius is a city that has emerged from the cocoon of isolation in recent years to become one of the most dynamic and fastest growing tourist destinations in Eastern Europe, and a great place to spend a long weekend soaking up the mix of culture and nightlife that Vilnius is famous for.
People come to the city from all over Europe for a variety of reasons, some for the reputation of great value for money that Lithuania has, others in curiosity as to what they will find there, but most travellers find that they finish their stay in Vilnius more fascinated by the country than they were before they arrived, and all go home having spent a lot less than they thought they would.
Like the other 2 major Baltic cities, Tallinn, and Riga, Vilnius is developing a reputation as the place to go for stag night celebrations, offering great nightlife, very cheap booze (around 30p for a pint in some bars) and plenty to do in the countryside around the city during the day as well.
You can get cheap deals on flights and accommodation to Vilnius throughout the year, and once there, with such a low cost of living in the city - particularly in the local bars away from the main tourist areas, a short break in Vilnius is always good value for money.
