Since gaining independence from the Soviet Union in the 1990s, Lithuania, like its neighbours Latvia and Estonia has had to grow up very quickly and modernise. Now held up as an example of what can be possible, Lithuania is now a member of the EU, and has one of the most dynamic economies in Europe. Not bad for a country that up until 1992 no one had really heard of.
With friendly locals, and rivalling Riga's claim to the title of the new Prague, the capital city Vilnius is a great place to spend a few days relaxing and sight seeing and within the old town there are some great bars and clubs. One of Vilnius' major tourist attractions is the city museum in the former KGB / Gestapo offices, where former inmates give guided tours of the cells and "interrogation" chambers.
Along the River Neris, which separates the Old, and New parts of the city, there are many walks and areas of Parkland to relax in. There is also a bronze memorial to the American musician Frank Zappa, who throughout his career inspired many fans in Eastern Europe with his eclectic style. The statue draws fans from all over the region and has become an impromptu shrine to his life.
Being over 250KM from the coast means that Vilnius is not close to any beaches, but within easy reach of the city, and well worth visiting, if only for a photograph is the "Centre of Europe". About 25KM from the city centre, the spot was named in 1989 by the French National Geographical Institute, and the government has plans to unveil a large monument there as part of the country's integration into the European Union.
