The United Arab Emirates are situated to the north of Saudi Arabia on a promontory of land separating the Arabian Gulf from the Indian Ocean. Made up of seven independent states: the UAE comprises Abu Dhabi; Al Ain; Ajman; Dubai; Fujairah; Ras Al Khaimah; and Sharjah. All of the states have their own cultures and attractions, and while Dubai has become the most welcoming to tourists, Fujairah is not far behind, and each of the others has a unique and fascinating character that attracts visitors in ever increasing numbers.
From small desert fiefdoms, become incredibly wealthy following the discovery of oil, the UAE has become a region of stability in the Middle East where the traditions of hospitality that Arabia has always been famed for have come to the fore, and western culture, while not exactly embraced, has been made welcome.
