Without a doubt, the many world class shopping malls such as Wafi Mall and City Centre Mall in Dubai coupled with the duty free shopping available makes it a true shoppers paradise.
The month long Shopping Festival takes place annually from mid January and bargain hunters will not be disappointed by the discounts on offer. The Tourist board also arranges many events during the shopping festival including pop concerts and fireworks displays. Shoppers will find that in most places, when they make a purchase, they receive a raffle ticket, and there are daily draws for fantastic prizes.
The duty free shops in the many malls provide excellent value for money, with designer goods at around half of the price one would expect to pay at home. During the shopping festival, prices are slashed even further, and amazing bargains can be had.
Away from the glitz of the shopping malls, Dubai has several old souks or markets. Most famous, and extensive is the Gold Souk, and wandering between the many jewellery stores is an eye-opening experience. Jewellery is sold by weight, with a supplement to the price based on how ornate the piece is. Prices are not fixed, and the shops expect you to haggle, but be realistic in your expectations, 20% off is a very good deal!
The nearby spice souk is a good place to pick up saffron as well as some great souvenirs. Nearby, the Dhows arriving from around the world unload cargos, and the area bustles with people.
The Al Karama textile souk is a large area of shops and stalls in the Bur Dubai part of the city to the south of the Creek. Increasingly overlooked by people drawn to the glamour of Deira and its shopping Malls, Al Karama is a pleasant place to browse through shops selling everything from fake designer shirts to ever-popular Pashminas. One of the best shops is Blue Marine, which has a great selection of goods.
