The culinary history of the Middle East region stretches back thousands of years, and many of the dishes eaten in the area today date back to the origins of civilization. 12,000 years ago, the land was not desert, and from the Nile to the River Tigris, the land was some of the first in the world to be farmed by man.
From those early days, crops such as dates and figs, and wheat were grown, and to these over the next millennia, spices from the east were mixed with other food types garnered from the Ottoman Empire and from Russia.
In the Middle East, barley and grapes were grown in order to produce beers and wine (Shiraz and Muscat originate in Iran and Oman respectively), although with the onset of Islam in the 7th century, alcohol lost its place in the region.
Other delicacies that you might get the chance to enjoy in the area include Tabouleh, Hummus, and the fine pastries and sweet coffee the region is famous for, as well as pitta bread, and goat cheese.
These days, although most of the hotels in middle eastern countries have a wide selection of international restaurants within them, its always worth settling down for a traditional Arabic banquet of authentic foods followed by a few blasts on a shisha pipe in order to truly appreciate the hospitality and cuisine of the region.
