The city of Toronto is the cultural capital of Canada, and home to some truly exceptional museums, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, The Royal Ontario Museum (with the only complete Ming tomb in the West, and some imposing totem poles from British Colombia as well as a jaw dropping mosaic ceiling above the entrance hall), and the rather bizarre Bata Shoe Museum, which boasts Elvis Presley's loafers in its collection.
Toronto Zoo, the 4th largest in the world is home to 5000 animals, and occupies a vast site close to Rouge Valley. It is separated into separate continental pavilions, so all the African elephants can be seen with the lions and zebras, and so on. It has a good conservation record, and is well worth making the trip out of town to visit.
Fort York was the British garrison that protected the crown interests along lake Ontario, and is now a living museum of early colonial life.
Most of the buildings were destroyed in the face of an American attack in the 1770s, but several survive, and the guides who all wear period costumes attempt to make the past come to life, with a variety of educational, and fun activities to take part in for all visitors.
