The name Toronto means meeting place, and the area had been settled for thousands of years by the Seneca Indians, before the French took over in 1720 and created a fur trading post.
The British took the area in 1793 and Toronto became York, and was the capital of Upper Canada until 1812, when after war with the Americans, the original name was brought back.
After the 1904 fire that gutted the city, Toronto went through a period of growth, that, while held back by the years of the great depression, saw the city become the fastest growing North American city through until the 1990s with vast numbers of immigrants entering the city, and bringing their cultures with them to make Toronto a very cosmopolitan place.
The tag of Toronto the Good described a place that was morally staid, and almost puritanical, but now this has faded, although without a doubt, Toronto is definitely a good place to go.
