The city of Sydney has two of the most enduring and identifiable landmarks in the world, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. Any city tour will take in both of them, and give you good photo opportunities, but to really see them up close, you need to make an effort. It is possible to climb to the top of the bridge as part of a group, and views from the top are nothing short of stunning, while watching one of the 3000 annual concerts and plays performed at the Opera House will give you the chance to hear how its unique shape gives it excellent acoustics, and makes every show more impressive.
The area of Darling Harbour was redeveloped during the 1980s, and was transformed from a run down industrial eyesore to a modern tourist village, with plenty of bars and restaurants, as well as a few museums including the Powerhouse Museum, and the Sydney Aquarium. There is also an IMAX cinema, which shows 3D films on its vast screen.
The Rocks at the foot of the bridge is the closest thing to an old town that Sydney has, and it was here that the first settlers came to live. There are several well-preserved houses and plenty of souvenir shops. The Rocks Museum of Contemporary Art is highly regarded globally as a showcase for new talent, and children of all ages love the Toy Museum.
