Most visitors to Melbourne will take advantage of the travel cards available in the city, and pack as much as possible into their stay, and there is plenty to see in the city.
The Melbourne old Gaol opened in 1841, and is almost as old as the city itself. Briefly home to Ned Kelly, until he was executed, the Gaol saw over 100 hangings, and death masks in the museum are grisly testament to its history.
The Zoo is a much brighter place to visit, and recent improvements have meant that the facilities for both animals and visitors are excellent. The nearby Royal Botanical Gardens are also worth a look, and offer a great insight into the local flora.
On the 55th floor of the imaginatively names sky scraper 525 Collins Street you will find the Melbourne Observation Deck, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the city from the top of the tallest office building in the Southern hemisphere.
