Although aboriginal peoples had settled the area around the Yarra River where modern Melbourne now stands, the city itself was only inaugurated in 1835, and soon became a centre for the mad rush for gold that took place in the 1850s throughout Australia. The city attracted immigrants from all over the world, and quickly grew in size, until the 1890s, when financial disaster beset the city, and caused a halt to all the growth, and the building boom, which had seen Melbourne, described as the Paris of the Antipodes.
Melbourne rivalled Sydney as most important city in Australia right up until the 1960s, when Sydney became the main financial centre for the country, although Melbourne has continued to grow, and now some three and a half million people, immigrants to the city from all over the world call Melbourne home.
Today, the thriving city continues to grow, and change, and new building booms come around every so often, and see large areas develop quickly in a variety of ways.
The diversity of people in Melbourne makes it one of the most dynamic and interesting cities in Australia, if not the world.
