The biggest horse race of the year is the Melbourne Gold Cup, and this takes place every December. Its probably the biggest such event in the Southern Hemisphere, and with some 82% of Australians taking a flutter on the outcome, usually leads to a big party atmosphere in the city afterwards.
There are 9 Aussie rules football teams in Melbourne, and the biggest name is Essendon. Throughout the season, you can usually see at least one of them in action.
